Has anybody read it? It's probably one of the funniest books ever, and keeps showing up on those "Best Books Ever" lists. Yet it's not too popular in India. I don't know the reason, but I do have a review here.
The story begins something like this : one Thursday the Earth gets destroyed to make way for a hyperspace bypass. Luckily one man named Arthur Dent is saved from certain death by a friend named Ford Prefect who later turns out to be a researcher for that wholly remarkable book, the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. What follows is a humorous account of how Ford and his gang cruise around the galaxy trying to find the answer to the ultimate question of Life, the Universe and Everything, while Arthur tries to find his place in the galaxy and tries very unsuccessfully to make tea. Author Douglas Adams' humor is dry, sarcastic and pokes fun at everything from airports to human nature (well, *especially* human nature).
There are four followup novels. They are :
The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
Life, the Universe and Everything
So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish
Mostly Harmless
Once you read the entire series, you'll probably read it again and again and again for as long as you live.
The books actually originated out of a wildly popular radio show of the same name. It has also been adapted into a play, a movie, a comic and a bathroom towel.
